North Carolina's famous barrier islands, known as the Outer Banks, were once set aside by the government as the country's first National Seashore in an effort to protect the natural environment. The northernmost accessible town on the Outer Banks, Corolla has seen rapid development over the past ten years and Currituck County's northern beaches around Corolla have been described by USA Weekend as ''one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast.''
