Cancun was almost unheard of 25 years ago. Now it is a magnificent resort city and honeymoon destination with over 25,000 rooms in four and five star hotels as well as all inclusive accommodations that offer package deals including food, beverage and rooms. Cancun boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but it also has historical and cultural sites that help make for a diverse honeymoon experience. For couple seeking a destination wedding, Mexico has made it easier to tie the knot and business is booming.

Not too far from the resorts of modern day Cancun, stand the silent temples of one of the world's oldest and most mysterious cultures- the ancient Maya. The most famous site, Chichen Itza, a complete city founded in 445 BC and inhabited until 1204 AD when it was mysteriously abandoned. There are several such sites right within the Hotel Zone so you can get your cosmopolitan and cultural Cancun all in one day. Other places places to go while you're there:

  • Xpu-Ha Ecopark-with jungle, wetlands, coral reef and cenotes (natural sinkholes) and a beautiful virgin beach
  • Xel-Ha-10-acre park of lagoons was a sacred Maya city and important commercial center
  • Isla Contey-A small, uninhabited island, 25 miles north of Cancun and 19 miles from Isla Mujeres, a refuge for birds, marine and animal life
  • Tulum-to the south of Cancun is the only major Mexican ruins to overlook the Caribbean Sea
  • Cozumel-Mexico's "dive central" is 40 miles south of Cancun's hotel zone
Cancun Island is approximately 16 miles long with the highest point above sea level being 200 feet. Along 540 miles of coastline, there are numerous coral islands and a reef barrier, the second largest in the world.
